by Emery Lee I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of moments of queer bookish joy since first joining the book community in 2015. Queer books have become such a prevalent part of the YA community, and they’ve been given a lot more spotlight, opening up more opportunities for queer authors and readers alike.  Of course, when I think about an instance of queer joy tied to some of my favorite books, one that always comes to mind is a story about the book What if It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera. In [...]

How (Not) to Meet Your Heroes

by Jasper Sanchez I’m not the kind of guy you want to bring as a plus one to a book signing. Trust me on this. I spent the entire time I was in waiting to see Alison Bechdel working up the courage to say something eloquent about how her portrayal of butch identity in Fun Home meant so much to me as a baby queer trying to puzzle out the intricacies of my own sexuality and gender identities only to get to the front of the line, freeze, and stutter, simply, “Thanks.” Or, [...]

Teens Talk About LGBTQIAP+ YA: Part 1

By |2020-08-19T22:34:34-05:00August 21st, 2020|Categories: Archive, Readers on Reading, Teen Voices|Tags: , , , , , |

Earlier this year, we asked teens to tell us about the LGBTQIAP+ YA books that have touched their lives. This is our first round-up of those stories! We are so excited to be able to share these. Books can touch lives in unseen ways, something that is especially the case for LGBTQIAP+ YA books. We wanted to make some of those unseen experiences visible. This series of post is a reminder of why LGBTQIAP+ YA is so important, why it is so necessary for all of us to keep writing and advocating for these books. "Of Fire [...]

Aaron H. Aceves, author of This Is Why They Hate Us (Spring 2022), interviews Kacen Callender, author of Felix Ever After.  Hi, Kacen! In the span of only two years or so, you’ve published two Middle Grade books, two Young Adult books, and a novel for adults. First of all, how are you so damn prolific! Haha, thanks! Honestly I tend to work on multiple novels all at the same time, jumping from one WIP to the next, so I usually end up with about five projects within a quick succession. But, then, I have to retreat back into the [...]

Trans YA Books by Trans Authors

Earlier today, J.K. Rowling tweeted her support for Maya Forstater, a woman who lost her job after tweeting anti-trans messages. J.K. Rowling’s tweet contained the underlying message that although trans people can “dress however [they] please” and “call [themselves] whatever [they]” want, at the end of the day, they are still kidding themselves. Although Rowling may not agree with how her statement is being received, this is a deeply anti-trans sentiment. And although some of Rowling’s anti-trans views have been publicized before, this tweet was one of the most explicit statements of what she thinks about us. Many of [...]

When Being Emily came out in 2012, it was the first YA novel to tell the story of a transgender girl from her perspective. This May, a new edition will be released with updated language and science, new scenes, a new author’s note and an introduction by poet and Harvard professor Stephanie Burt. To celebrate this upcoming edition, Being Emily author Rachel Gold and Stephanie Burt interviewed each other about the novel and related topics. We begin with questions for both of us and then devolve into Rachel sidetracking Stephanie to talk about comic books. (Which is really [...]

The Hero’s Journey in Trans YA

by Vee S. Introduction Last year I wrote a post about the “Acceptance” Narrative in Trans YA. That post detailed my thoughts on three problematic books that feature cis characters lamenting how hard it is to know someone who is trans. Today, I want to talk about another issue of representation in trans YA, and a narrative that is even more common. This post is kind of a second blush look at representation in trans YA. The “acceptance” narrative covered the really problematic representation, and this post tackles the next, more nuanced stage. Today I’d like to talk [...]
