Book Review: Unicorn Hunting by A.R. Hellbender

Reviewer: Leslie Rewis 3.5/5 stars 152 pages Unicorn Hunting by A.R. Hellbender was a very surprising read. Most of the YA fiction that I have read about queer characters tends to focus more on their coming out and what ensues because of it. If you are looking for a story with a queer character that has a plot line not revolving around coming out, Unicorn Hunting is a good place to start. This is the perfect book for a book lover of fantasy, action, and of course, non-straight crushes. Unicorn Hunting by A. R. Hellbender (BookCountry, 2013) [...]

Review: Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley

by Laurel May When I heard this book was about an interracial lesbian couple living in the 1950's I immediately wanted it. I was just blown away by the idea of this story! Now that I have read it, I am blown away by the actual story. What an exceptional book! "Lies We Tell Ourselves" is not an easy read. You only have to look at the time period to understand why that is. This book is set in 1959, after the desegregation of Little Rock School. Here, Sarah and 10 other black students are the first to [...]

Originally published on the UK Lesfic website. I did a Q&A on another author's blog a while ago, and I was asked what one message did I hope readers took away from my books? My answer was short and sweet: I wanted readers to know that it's okay to be gay, and that assertion was at the forefront of my mind when I started to write my latest Young Adult novel, Because of Her. I didn't want it to just be a let's run around and tell everyone how fab it is to be queer, I just wanted [...]

Girl Sex 101

Editor's Note: There are NSFW text and images in this post.  How did you learn about sex? From health class? Your parents? Your first time? Porn? It’s hard to learn about sex at all, even harder if you’re on the LGBTQ spectrum. For that reason, many of us have to seek out info on our own, leading us to the internet or that more experienced friend. Sometimes that works out well. Other times, not so much. As a reader, I looked for books, finding a dark corner of the library where I could surreptitiously flip through pages. I [...]

YA Latina Lesbians: On Mayra Lazara Dole’s Down to the Bone

By |2020-03-28T13:42:44-05:00January 14th, 2014|Categories: Archive, Book Review|Tags: , , |

by Sonia Alejandra Rodriguez Down to the Bone (Harper Teen & Bella Books, 2012) In Mayra Lazara Dole’s [1] Down to the Bone (2012) Laura, a Cuban-American high school junior, is forced to come-out when her Catholic school teacher reads Laura’s private texts to her girlfriend aloud to the entire class. As a result, Laura is humiliated, kicked out of school, and asked by her mother to leave their home. Dole’s description of Laura’s coming-out is significant, among many reasons, because it centers a Latina lesbian protagonist. Despite the increased awareness for the need of diverse [...]

Review: Pink by Lili Wilkinson

Sam blogs online at LoonyReads, and can be found on Twitter under @Pagan_Elina.   Like many before me, my first introduction to gay and lesbian characters in YA Lit was in Holly Black’s Tithe. I remember being enthralled by Corny, and I found his and Naphemel’s relationship to be riveting and so interesting. I have always been an open minded person and from then on started to read as many GLBT books and I could, partly for my own mixed thoughts about myself. When Vicky asked me to do this Review for the opening of the GayYa.org I [...]

Review: Ash by Malinda Lo

Review by Andrea of Aines Realm. Andrea is a book reviewer and blogger and can be found on Twitter @AineFey. I read Ash by Malinda Lo a few months ago for a book club. It was one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. It’s a retelling of the classic Fairy Tale, Cinderella, but with many differences. It starts out very similar, with the mother passing away and the father remarrying a woman with two daughters of her own, followed shortly by his own death. Due to her father’s money not being able to keep a household running, [...]
