To most people, I'm a pretty typical girl who likes girl things, who has been with a guy for 12 years. Simple, uncontroversial. Few people probably realize I've ever felt ashamed or confused about gender or sexuality. But as I sat down to write this post, I realized that in fact, I've dealt with layers of confusion about it as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time pretending to be a boy. Mind you, it was in the context of pretend games, elaborate pretend games with my friends [...]

What I Want to See in the Bookstore

When was the last time you saw a character in a tv or book whose entire life revolves around their heterosexuality? Never? Me too. Admittedly, heterosexual people have not gone through the horrible atrocities the LGBTQ community has dealt with over the course of history. Straight people do not have to deal with the potential of being kicked out of their homes once they come out. Obviously, the LGBTQ community does need novels about coming out. But why are the vast majority of LGBTQ YA books only about the beginning of a queer person’s identity? These books tend [...]

Gomorrahs of the Deep, a Musical Coming Some Day to Off-Broadway Part 3!

By |2020-03-28T13:43:02-05:00June 12th, 2011|Categories: Archive, Author Guest Blog|

We are happy to bring you the third and final part of Gomorrahs of the Deep, a Musical Coming Some Day to Off-Broadway by Steve Berman, a gay musical short story from his upcoming anthology. Missed Part 2? Catch up here: http://www.yapride.org/?p=289   "Where did you get the guitar,” Hugh asked when he saw me sitting in the front row in English. For the first, and last, time. “I borrowed it from the music department.” He smiled. “Do you even know how to play?” “No, that’s why I borrowed a guitarist, too.” I waved toward Casey, who also cut class [...]

I know what it’s like trying to find a scholarship that really fits who you are. It seems they want a little more of this or a little more of that. Well, I decided to start my own scholarship and hopefully there will be people out there that realize this is them. It’s very informal and that means you will be applying for a scholarship with an amount you aren’t sure about. To help make it easier, it will be at least $200 which I will pay if we don’t raise enough money. Now…raise money? What’s that mean? [...]

Review of “I am J” by Cris Beam

Jay is a teenage boy, going through the typical teenage identity crisis: His parents don't understand him, his old friends are becoming distant, and he's awkward around the opposite sex. But there's something different about Jay. His actual name is Jeni. In a world where most transgender characters are female, it's nice to read a story about someone achieving manhood...literally. Jay's parents and their reaction to his new life are portrayed realistically: 'She'll grow out of it.' 'Where did we go wrong?' 'But you're such a pretty girl!' Jay refuses to roll with the punches or back down [...]

Sandy writes at her blog http://scribing-shadows.blogspot.com/ She can be found on Twitter under Silversparrow04 My Thoughts Can I say that I feel a little lost now that this series is finally over? And when I say lost I don’t mean that the book left me confused and with unanswered questions, I mean lost because the last page has been printed and I am left behind in the real world while the world of Wicked Lovely continues on in an alternate dimension somewhere without me. It’s a bittersweet feeling certainly and its one I’m happy to feel because it means that [...]
